While promoting his recent film WHIPLASH, a much-loved award winner on the festival circuit, Miles Teller had some harsh words about DIVERGENT, the role of Peter, and how working on the franchise left him feeling.
He told W Magazine:
“When I first read ‘Whiplash’, I was feeling dead inside. I didn’t have an interesting part [in ‘Divergent’], and I’d taken the film for business reasons: It was the first movie I’d done that was going to have an international audience. I called my agent and said, ‘This sucks.’
After the interview quote hit the web, it was met with quite a bit of fan outrage, followed swiftly by statements contradicting it. First came a statement from Miles’ agent via The Hollywood Reporter:
“Accustomed to being more involved in the process of filmmaking, Miles regrets those words. He does value his relationship with Lionsgate and his participation in the franchise.”
Then Miles had this to say on Twitter:
Since the quote and the statements appeared, there’s been a lot of back and forth regarding the very smug attitude Teller portrays so well in all those twenty-somethings rom-coms and his extremely dry sense of humor, many of which are similar to this observation from Andrew over at Hypable:
I’ve interviewed Teller a couple of times for Divergent (once on the film’s set in Chicago and once at San Diego Comic-Con) and can tell you that he is the most smug celebrity I’ve ever spoken to. Both times he came off, in my opinion, like he was uninterested in speaking about the film and above any conversation about it.
His smug attitude can come off as dry humor, so maybe that’s what happened with this new interview.
While his smugness doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise, the lashing out at DIVERGENT seems a bit unfair given that we doubt he made movies like THE FANTASTIC FOUR, 21 & OVER, and his latest TWO NIGHT STAND for the sake of his craft. We’ll see how it plays out in the future!
So far, none of his DIVERGENT co-stars nor the Lionsgate camp have responded to the comments.
